I was hand washing a faux leather skirt and in the first wash the water was DARK. At first I thought it's just excess dye coming out and it was no problem. But then after some wringing, I suddenly felt DIZZY from the fumes coming off of the water.
I looked into it some more and turns out it's a very well known thing that clothing (most notoriously fast fashion ones) are made with a crap ton of dangerous industrial solvents, heavy metal dyes, and "volatile organic compounds" (VOC). Basically things that are VERY bad for you and when seeped into your skin through the clothing can cause organ toxicity, hormone disruption, cancer causing carcinogens.
And to think I only experienced it because I hand washed it!! After 4 washes the water was still dark from the dye. This isn't even a shein or temu piece of clothing its literally Hollister and being sold in stores in the US.
Why these chemicals aren't banned in clothing manufacturing is beyond me. Please be careful of what you buy and own, and try to avoid fast fashion as much as possible!!
